This is a sparkler of a stone in a lovely pink with silver overtones. To maximize size there is a natural that has been left in the girdle of one corner. It is barely eye-visible without magnification, and will be easily hidden by any sized prong in that location.
Pink tourmaline owes it color to manganese. This stone, however, came out of the ground in Mozambique as colourless tourmaline, and similar to blue topaz, owes its color to quick treatment with radiation—which only works in the case of tourmaline, if the stones already contain manganese. Interestingly, a recent Caltech paper suggests that in all cases pink tourmaline starts off colorless, and then is exposed to natural radiation to cause the pink color: "This radiation could have been effective only after the pegmatite cooled below the decolorizing temperature of tourmaline, suggesting that most pink elbaites originally grew nearly colorless in the pegmatites and only later attained their pink color through oxidation of Mn via ionizing radiation.” (Reinitz & Rossman).
We think it’s a great example a smart treatment to make a beautiful stone more affordable. Usually pink tourmaline of this color would wholesale in the $200/ct range, so this stone is being offered at quite a price.
